An Estate Manager has many important duties in today’s affluent household. Along with these duties come great responsibilities. That’s why it takes a special person, with special talents, to be qualified to be an exceptional Estate Manager. We’re going to cover some of the most important duties of an Estate Manager below.
In modern homes where the butler is the most senior worker, titles such as house manager, staff manager, and head of household staff are sometimes given to the butler. But in the most common usage today, the term Estate Manager, is relegated to a person in an even higher position. This person is usually in charge of all the household staff, including the butlers. Indeed, the Estate Manager resides at the top of the chain of command, just under the owners of the home or estate.
This person is usually in charge of homes, estates, or properties. They are also in charge of overseeing large collections of art and antiques.
He or she typically works directly with the homeowners to oversee and run the owner’s properties and interests. This person sets the standards of service, and is usually given the trusted responsibility of recruiting staff, purchasing goods, and even keeping of some records.
In many cases the estate manager will be responsible to travel ahead of the estate owner to prepare for the owner’s arrival on trips, holiday, and business meetings. He or she will also make arrangements for parties and events at home as well as on the road.
Not only must the Estate Manager have the above capabilities and more, but they must be adaptable.
Here is a short list of what we consider to be important skills to qualify as an EM:
- Social etiquette training
- Previous personal service experience working for estate owners
- Educated in luxury items such as fine-art, antiques, and cars where necessary
- Skills and experience in areas of finance, computers, and planning.
- Human resources management, and hiring skills

- Resourcefulness
As you can see, this is a very important position in the household, and that’s why it requires a special person with multiple talents and abilities.
